The ERIGrid project (supported by the H2020 Programme under Grant Agreement No. 654113) has been providing free laboratory access to engineers working in the domain of smart grids and Distributed Energy Resources (DER). With the Transnational Access programme successful applicants are supported with:
- travelling
- accommodation
- lab access to ERIGrid testing and simulation facilities
- access to concentrated know-how and best practices in the field of smart grid systems and DER, such as: power system components characterisation and evaluation, smart grid ICT / automation validation, co-simulation, real-time simulation and Power/Controller Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL), and others.
EMTECH SPACE P.C. was one of the successful applicants of the Transnational Access calls by proposing to validate its iReact-NG solution (for power grid management and optimization) against real-world components and executed with realistic scenarios. The objective was to attain a level of validation that will allow the solution to move from internal development and testing towards being market-ready, i.e. being fully deployable and operational on critical infrastructure.
Mr. Sami Hammal (EMTECH – Head of Embedded Systems) made the following statement:
“During the two weeks period of 24th Feb. to the 6th of Mar., we had the opportunity to access AIT’s state-of-the-art lab facilities and departments related to the energy sector. Our main goal was to verify the interoperability of our devices using a commercial SCADA and to advance our knowledge of the IEC-61850 standard in order to further integrate it in our product line. Dr. Thomas I. Strasser (AIT Senior Scientist – Electric Energy Systems) provided us with useful insights and networking leads. A tour was also given to the laboratories and test facilities – amongst them a substation facility used in various sophisticated simulation configurations and we were presented with AIT’s current activities and on-going research in different sectors.”
(Mr. Sami Hammal, Mr. Nikolaos-Antonios Livanos, Dr. Thomas I. Strasser)
During this period, future collaboration opportunities amongst EMTECH & AIT were explored – particularly related to the space sector where EMTECH demonstrates significant experience and it was agreed by the company representatives to monitor and participate in the up-coming activities of the ERIGRID 2 project.
